YOUTH EDUCATION VISIONING WORKSHOP  - Saturday, August 7th at 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Lunch Provided)

This Visioning Workshop is planned to bring our Unity of Salem community together to help Vision and look at the "Bigger Picture" as we bring our Youth Program into alignment with Unity of Salem's Transformation Experience.

If you are involved or interested in being involved in our Youth Program as a parent, board member, teacher, sponsor or interested congregant you are invited to attend. Please call the office or sign up in the kitchen so we know how much food to provide for lunch.

ENLIGHTENED LEADER WEBINAR:  STAND LIKE MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE WATER - Thursday, August 12th at 5:00 p.m.

You don’t have to be in the Enlightened Leader program to attend and enjoy this fourth webinar of the year for the Transformational Experience.  The webinar experiences have provided life changing tools to help us in our everyday situations and issues and to help us to live more of a conscious life.  The next webinar will be no different.  Join us for STAND LIKE MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE WATER:  Reflections on Stress and Human Spirituality.  Our Presenter will be Brian Luke Seaward.  His book of the same title is in the bookstore.  Plan to join us in the sanctuary at 5:00 p.m. for this exciting online-streaming webinar event.

GROUNDS WORK PARTY - Saturday, August 14th at 8:30 a.m.  (Lunch Provided)

Our Interfaith Peace Festival is almost here.  We have more than 500 people coming through our property during the Festival, so we want it to look inviting, nurturing and beautiful.

Come join the Party on August 14th, starting at 8:30 a.m. to help clean up the grounds.  The more the merrier.  If you are looking for a service project, this one can’t be missed.  If you can’t physically work on the grounds, come and bring a potluck dish for lunch for those who can.

PETER BERGEL OF OREGON PEACEWORKS' PRESENTS "USING THE VISIONING PROCESS TO REINVENT THE PEACE MOVEMENT"  - Wednesday August 18th at 7:00 p.m.

The peace movement – indeed the entire progressive movement – suffers from not having a comprehensive strategy equal to the challenges we face.  Oregon PeaceWorks’ Peace Visioning Project is an attempt to address this need.

A strategy is a way to get from here to there. If we don’t know where “there” is, it’s not possible to craft a relevant strategy. Yet, as a movement, we have never defined what we mean by “peace,” let alone agreed upon it.

This project is drawing forth -- from many groups seeking to build a better world -- an agreed  consensus about the vision we are all working to create: a vision of sustainable practices in every area: international relations, certainly, but also environment, government, education, media, human rights and many more. Using that vision, each group can create its own strategy to move its piece of the effort forward in the same direction. Instead of seeking an elusive unity of action, we can aim instead for unity of vision. This project seeks nothing less than to reinvigorate the entire progressive movement – to “reinvent the American Dream.”

THIRD ANNUAL INTERFAITH PEACE FESTIVAL - Saturday, August 21st, starting at 10:30 a.m. and going all day

The festival committee has been working hard this year to bring about the 3rd annual Interfaith Peace Festival. In the words of our newest committee member, Rev. Don Kerr from Woodland Chapel, “It may be that the world is ready for more collaboration and less competition, more compassion and less condemnation, more understanding and less undoing.  By being a part of a movement to live in Light, Love, Cooperation and Understanding, we can become the change we wish to see.  The shift from old ideas to a new paradigm for Peace on Earth and Goodwill for all mankind is done one small act at a time.”

By volunteering, attending, inviting friends, we are all living the truth that NOW is the time and WE are the ones.  This year’s festival is bigger and better than ever.  You won’t want to miss a special musical performance from Native American flutist and 2009 NAMA winner Jan Michael Looking Wolf.  During the festival Jan will be filming a music video for his much anticipated new single, “Live As One”.  We are also honored to welcome a few new faces as well and we think festival goers of all ages will enjoy the unique music style of Sol Seed.  The 4 young men of Sol Seed can only be described as reggae rock fusion for the soul.  Also, Lynda Cole, an award winning flutist and Harpist will be gracing us with her music.

With a fresh new line up of guest speakers, cultural activities, drumming circles, a children’s village, exhibits and food vendors, this family friendly event is a must attend event.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 21st.  The event starts at 10:30 a.m. and as always, admission is free.

ENLIGHTENED LEADERS POST-WEBINAR MEETING - Thursday, August 26th at 7:00 p.m.

Our Post Webinar evening will be Thursday, August 26th at 7:00 p.m. when we will gather together to work on the material presented in the webinar.

SEPTEMBER EVENTS

Rule

UNITY WORLD DAY OF PRAYER - Thursday, September 9th, all day

Seventeen years ago, Unity created World Day of Prayer, held the second Thursday in September.  This is an annual celebration to affirm peace, abundance, and love on an individual and global level.   This year's theme is "Living In The Flow" to remind us the Divine is within us, ever-present and active.  The event will coincide with the completion of the Unity Village fountain restoration.  You can participate in the World Day of Prayer in several ways:

1.  Download and fill out your prayer list with the names of those you would like blessed during a 24 hour prayer vigil in the Silent Unity Chapel at Unity Village on September 9th.  Go to (www.worlddayofprayer.org) or forms will be available for you to fill out at Unity of Salem also.

2.  Hold the image of the fountains at Unity Village being completed.

3.  Affirm on September 9th, "We are living expressions of Divine Light flowing forth into the world."

4.  Attend the noon meditation on Sept. 9 at Unity of Salem.  Some people bring their lunch to eat afterwards.

5.  Attend our Taize service of healing, music and prayer at 7:00 p.m. on September 9th in the Sanctuary.

TAIZE HEALING PRAYER SERVICE  - Thursday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m.

Matthew 18: 20 says, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” When 2 or more spiritual communities gather worldwide for a prayer service the God energy encompasses all. Our next Taize healing prayer service will be held on Unity World Day of Prayer. Their theme this year uses the first two Unity principles: #1 God is Absolute Good, everywhere present. #2 We have a spark of divinity or Christ spirit within us. Our very essence is of God, and therefore we are inherently good. Taize is a meditative, sacred service of song and prayer, creating an environment where we can go within to a deeper level of connectedness to our Higher Power. Attend our Taize service of healing, music, and prayer at 7:00 PM on September 9th in the Sanctuary.

CONSULTANT GUIDE, CINDY HENSON RETURNS FOR OUR ONE-YEAR CELEBRATION - Friday, September 24th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 25th at 9:00 a.m.

Our Consultant Guide for the Transformational Experience, Cindy Henson will return for the weekend of September 24th - 26th.  Friday evening and Saturday morning are set aside as times for everyone in the congregation to gather with Cindy.  Please mark your calendar for those dates and plan to spend some time with Cindy so you can learn more about how the Transformational Experience is affecting your Spiritual Community.

CURRENT NEWS

Rule

Monthly Food Drive - Sundays

Unity of Salem participates in the food sharing program put on by the Salvation Army. A barrel is placed in the kitchen to collect nonperishable food items throughout the month and when it is full, we contact the Salvation Army to pick up the full barrel and replace it with a new barrel.  We are attempting to fill the barrel every month to assist those who are experiencing a financial downturn in their lives.  Please consider bringing food items for the barrel on a regular basis.

Abundance Corner - Sundays

From time to time, our own spiritual community has people who need assistance to make it through to the end of the month.  Because of this, we decided to create the Abundance Corner, which is in the unused storage area in the Bookstore, next to the restroom.  Please bring nonperishable food items and items such as toilet paper, paper towels and such to share with our own folks.

If you are having trouble making it to the end of the month, please go to the Abundance Corner and take what you need.  There are sacks beside the shelves in the Abundance Corner for your use.

CD's of Each Sunday Service - Available within 30 minutes after each Service

We are now able to put the full Sunday Service onto CD's for purchase in the Bookstore.  The CD's are digital high-quality and contain everything from the service except announcements.  Also, each section of the service is placed as a track on the CD so you are able to go to whatever track you are most interested in.  The CD's are $5.00, which is payable in the Bookstore and available approximately 30 minutes after each service.

Partner With A Teen Program

The Unity of Salem Youth Education Department has a new opportunity for the congregation, its "Partner with a Teen" program.  This program's intention is to make it possible for the Y.O.U. (high school age) and Uniteens (middle schoolers) to attend regional retreats AND to provide intergenerational connection within our spiritual community.  The teens put on a number of fundraisers during the year.  This raises about half the money needed for the eligible students to attend.  Two events are scheduled for this summer.  The events average $200 per person attending.  We have several YOUers and a large number of Uniteens eligible to attend.  You could participate in this program by writing an extra check for $100, marking it "Partner with a Teen" and putting it in the Sunday offering.  We so appreciate several of the congregation who did just that the very first Sunday it was mentioned.  There will be an opportunity for each teen to connect with his/her Partner to share about their experience.
